Persephone Embracing Hades

as I sink into the earth
yesterday , i was the morning
dew on the petal and
songbirds greeting a wakening world
and as careless as fog at daybreak
i was oranges and yellows and a
thousand shades of red
i was sunlight on endless fields of gold
and sunlight through falling water
and sunlight streaming through canopies
of trembling eucalyptus and seething clover
i have been asleep,
drowsing through the movement
around me and in me
while a river of purple flowed beneath my feet
and blues poured from my mouth and from
my slumbering eyes
somehow,
i have never been the soil
now, as i sink into the earth
and abandon the sun
as night envelopes, i become shadow
as shapes disintegrate, i become decay
now, i am the the mulch of an unremarkable history
I am a dung heap, a confusion,
a living waste depot,
a teeming mass of inscrutable hunger
masked as chaos,
a sunken vessel filled with the remnants of centuries
today
i am the womb of tomorrow
